Using a need analysis formula set by Congress, Federal Student Aid uses the information the student reported on his/her application to calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This number represents the amount the student and the student's family are expected to contribute toward the student's education. The school uses the EFC to determine how much federal student aid the student may be eligible to receive.

An asterisk (*) that displays next to the EFC indicates that the transaction has been selected for verification.

If a “C” displays next to the EFC, it means that the SAR C Flag is set to yes. The SAR C Flag is set when there is some questionable information on the Student Aid Report.
